Manipulation Under Sedation

If you have persistent pain in your back, neck, or other region that is not responding as expected to chiropractic care or other forms of treatment, you may benefit from a technique known as manipulation under sedation. This technique, which is often used when other conservative treatment options have been exhausted, may be the answer you have been searching for. In fact, it is so effective that it usually eliminates the need for surgery and/or further therapy.

Of the many spinal manipulation and therapeutic techniques used by our NYC doctors to help relieve your pain, manipulation under sedation is the most advanced option available. Contact The Spine Care Institute today!

If you are suffering from any of the following on a severe or chronic level, you may benefit greatly from manipulation under sedation:

  • Back Pain
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Shortened Muscles
  • Neck Pain
  • Fibrous Adhesions
  • Disc Damage
  • Radiating Pain
  • Failed Spinal Surgery
  • Other Long Term Pain Syndromes
  • TMJ Dysfunction
  • Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis)
Manipulation Under Sedation

Also known as MUA, manipulation under anesthesia/sedation uses a combination of different techniques that include passive stretching, postural kinesthetic maneuvers, and short-lever manipulations that break up scar tissue (fibrous adhesions) around the spine. The goal is to reduce/ eliminate pain and restore normal spinal motion. It can be done during mild sedation or under general anesthesia. First used in the 1930's, this treatment method has recently become more widely accepted due to its high success rate and advances that have been made in anesthesia.

Usually, individuals that are chosen to have spinal manipulation under sedation are those that have tried other techniques for six to eight consecutive weeks. If symptoms do not resolve or return, the chiropractor will usually recommend manipulation under sedation.

Dr. O'Brien offers several spinal manipulation methods to help relieve your pain, including manipulation under sedation. He is one of only a small number of doctors in NYC who is certified to perform this advanced and highly effective technique. Feel free to contact The Spine Care Institute today for a consultation.
